Political Science as an independent department came into existence in 1960, prior to which it had been a part of the heterogeneous department of History and Economics. Political Science was taught as subsidiary for the degree classes before 1960. In 1960 when Political Science was introduced both as major and minor subjects for the degree classes Prof. M. S. Patil became the first Head of the Department. In 1960 Dr. A. M. Rahashekharaiah joined the department. He stayed here only for one year and his services were transferred to the Department of Political Science of the Karnatak University, Dharwad. Ms. Usha Murthy joined the department in 1961. After the retirement of M. S. Patil in 1985 Ms. Usha Murthy took over as the Head of the Department of Political Science and was promoted as Principal of Karnatak Arts College in 1993 and retired in 1996. Mr. R. V. Horadi joined the department in 1969 and became the Head of the Department in 1993. Dr. P. A. Police Patil was regularised as lecturer in 1994 and Dr. Suresh N. Hullannavar joined as lecturer in 1997. Presently he is working as Head of the Department. Dr. M. B. Dalapati joined as lecturer in 2003.
Activities of Political Science Study Circle
With the intention of enhancing the knowledge of the students various special lectures by eminent scholars are arranged. Workshops organised every academic year. Equal importance is also given to seminars by students.
