In the year 1944, the Department of Foreign Languages was started with creation of the post of Assistant Lecturer in French.

The Department of Foreign Languages consisted of teachers who taught French, German and Russian since its inception.

Dr. S. S. Herlekar with Ph.D. in Hindi and M.A. in French joined the department as lecturer in French in the year 1980.

She also became the Principal of Karnatak Arts College for almost a year before she eventually retired in the year 2012.

In the year 1986, Dr. Prema Hallikeri joined the department as lecturer in French. She was a M.B.A. and had a M.Phil. degree in French from Pondicherry Central University, Ph.D. in French fro English and Foreign Languages Central University [EFLU], Hyderabad.

At presently only the courses in French are running in the Department of Foreign Languages of Karnatak Arts College. The German courses have closed down due to want of teachers in Gernan. The only permanent teacher who teaches French is Dr. Prema Hallikeri, Associate Professor, who ie heading the Department of Foreign Languages. The courses running in French are Optional and Basic French at Degree levels [B.A., B.Com., B. Music, etc]. She is also the Co-ordinator of P.G. Department of Foreign Languages, Karnatak University, Dharwad and teaches open elective course in French for PG level and the evening courses in French [Certificate, Diploma and Advanced Diploma].
